Finding your aesthetic as a blogger

I feel like blog photography and finding your own blog aesthetic is such an important and underrated thing about blogging. As well as finding your aesthetic on Instagram, I think it helps you set yourself apart from other bloggers and it just seems to pull everything together.

I have been in a bit of a funk lately with my photography on my blog and Instagram. In the past I’ve always been quite happy with my photo’s but I’ve felt they just haven’t been me, if that makes sense? Over the past year or so I’ve brought so many props mainly flowers and plants because why not? & tried out so many different editing apps and filters but nothing ever seemed right.

The other day I just decided to get my camera out and shoot, no pressure just set up my camera and props then just took a few (hundred) photo’s and I feel like I have now found my aesthetic as a blogger. Everything just seemed to click into place, I’m loving the darker tones, the greenery and just the general vibe. I kind of just want to take all of my photos for my blog posts that I’ve published before, does that sound ridiculous?

Here are some tips to help you find your aesthetic..

1. Pin ideas on Pinterest 

Pinterest can be amazing for inspiration and finding your aesthetic. I think if it wasn’t for Pinterest I’d still be taking bright and light photo’s. Honestly I’m obsessed with Pinterest right now and haven’t stopped pinning flatlay ideas. I have a whole board for blog inspiration and I definitely recommended creating a board if you haven’t already!   

2. Experiment

 Experiment is the best way to find your aesthetic with your photo’s. Take a few hours out of your day, get your camera out and all your blog props and just shoot. You’ll be surprised at what you do get when your not thinking about anything. Just play about with angles and change it up to what you normally would do. I used to love white, clean backgrounds and I still do but now I just add more props like magazines etc so it just adds a bit more to the photo. 

3. Mix up your props 

Props are amazing and can make your photo stand out from everyone else. Even though I’ve brought quite a lot of things to use in my photo’s I have found a lot just around my room and the house so you honestly don’t need to spend a lot of money on them. I used to always go for pink and mostly rose gold accessories which I still love and may use in some photo’s but I now have more green so my fake plants from Ikea are perfect. When finding props to use make sure you pick some that reflect the colours and style you like and they’ll fit together so much better! 

4. Experiment with filters  

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve downloaded different apps just to try out their filters. The only one that’s worked for me is VSCO. I mean I’ve tried lightroom & Afterlight which I’ve heard everyone rave about but I just can’t get to grips with them. If you find an editing app which you love stay with it! Filters are definitely your friend when it comes to Instagram and if you do use VSCO it’s so easy to make sure you have the same edit on every photo. 

5. Find your own trend

When I first started out as a blogger everyone was using the marble photo backgrounds which I thought oh I obviously need the marble background so picked up a couple of wallpaper samples but I honestly didn’t like the aesthetic it was giving so I ditched it. Obviously there is nothing wrong with marble and of course if it’s part of your aesthetic go for it but it just didn’t work for me. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your own style and change things up. 

I am honestly so happy I’ve now found my aesthetic as a blogger and can’t wait to make my blog and Instagram the best it can be. Have you found your aesthetic as a blogger?
