To be honest before I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma I hadn’t heard of Blood Cancer UK (formerly Bloodwise). So, who are Blood Cancer UK? They are the UK’s specialist blood cancer charity, they were founded in 1960 by a family called the Eastwoods, who sadly lost their 6 year old daughter Susan to leukaemia. They believed there could and should be hope for people with blood cancer. Since 1960 Blood Cancer UK have invested over £500 million in a number of different research projects which have helped improve understanding, diagnosis and treatment of blood cancers which is amazing.
Blood cancer is the most common cancer in children and young adults, with almost 2 in 5 cancers being blood cancer.
What does Blood Cancer UK do?
Today, two-thirds of everyone diagnosed with blood cancer will still be here in five years time which is awesome! Since 1960, Bloodwise invested more than £500 million in blood cancer research – transforming survival rates and improving the lives of people with blood cancer. At any one time they have over £90 million invested in research, and they are currently funding over 1,000 researchers and clinicians across more than 220 active research projects.
They provide vital support to everyone affected by blood cancer, whether your a patient, a family member, a doctor or nurse. They have one of the largest collections of information and support on the internet and a dedicated free support line (0808 2080 888) which is available Monday to Friday – 10am until 4pm.
They rely solely on the generosity of supporters to carry on their life saving work.
